Around eight months ago, when the effects of the lockdown were imminent, my sister and I talked about how life would look like till a vaccine was invented. Although sad, this conversation gave both of us a lot of insight into the difficult times that laid ahead. Scariest for us, however, was watching the world crumble outside while we sat in the bubble we are privileged to have. As millions of daily wage workers became unemployed and the economy started falling, I knew that any difference made right now would go a long way in helping someone. So, sitting down with my sister, we came up with an idea for an organization that would train women basic craftsmanship skills that they could use to make and sell products for a living.

What’s more? We would encourage sustainability by re-using waste fabrics from boutiques all over the city. And so Virsaa came to be- a social initiative taken to provide underprivileged women the means by which they can become financially independent, and provide a sustainable living for themselves and their families. The name itself means ‘heritage’, in Punjabi. By naming it this, we pay homage to our background, which is an integral part of shaping who we are; who we came to be today. Through this initiative, we bring to the world a part of us; we bring to you a part of us.
