In every movie, every TV show that you watch and love, there is always one character that particularly catches your attention- one that you seem to admire the most. A lot of the times, what attracts you to them is their style and the way in which they carry themselves. Every outfit has a story to tell, much greater than the one seen at hand. Each stylist hired by a show or movie meticulously puts together each clothing item, each accessory for you to see, observe and read from. They may just seem like daily outfits to you, but they are costumes specifically chosen for the exact scene, and are done so for a reason. There is a reason that Regina George wears pink, and why Blair Waldorf wears a headband, and I’m here to tell you why.

Blair Waldorf, the Queen B of Gossip Girl, has an iconic style that’s going to be remembered for decades to come. Her outfits have been particularly chosen by the stylists on set to represent the elitist Upper East Side. Known for only wearing couture brands, Blair is also recognized by her headband, a symbol of power and popularity in the show. It is because of her that this accessory made a comeback in the real world. This particular outfit consists of a long sleeve dull gold colored dress, laced around the trim of the sleeves and the skirt. The dress is layered with a short brown cape to add a distinct element to the piece. However, what makes the outfit really Blair’s is the addition of black patterned stockings, with matching ballerinas. Blair can be seen wearing stockings even with a sleeveless short dress on a summer day, all because a lady never wears a Of course, the headband is present, although not the center of attention as during this time, Blair is her identity and trying to change the image that the world has of her. There is a subtle, although long, beaded necklace because no outfit is complete without jewelry. Blair, favoring looks over comfort, carries a clutch instead of something handier like a purse. The outfit is meant to be a casual day in the city, and that may mean something else for us, but this is what it means for the one and only Blair Waldorf.

Regina George, representative of the ‘popular high school girl’, leader of The Plastics, and a Mean Girl, wears pink on Wednesdays. She is an icon from the 2000’s, and has an entire aesthetic based around her. She is known to be manipulative, powerful, and can get anything(one) she wants. Pink is a color typical to girls, more specifically the extremely feminine ones, and Regina embraces it as a weekly ritual. Over time, pink has become a stereotype more than a color. It is a symbol of the cunning, ambitious, and charismatic 'girly girls', known to have a mean side, which is highlighted when someone stands in the way of what they want. Had these traits been present in a man, he would be considered extremely attractive. However, in a woman, what's attractive is the looks- not the intelligence that lies underneath it. This particular look is iconic for the reason it's first Wednesday shown in the movie. The slogan on her t-shirt 'A Little Bit Dramatic' is a severe hyperbole, as her drama is nothing short than can be seen a Broadway play. The pink cardigan is layered over it, with the buttons open. A short skirt of the same color is matched, along with hot pink pumps. Regina's blonde hair was the birth of the 'dumb blonde' stereotype, which is quite unfortunate for the many intellectual blondes out there. All in all, Regina will always be looked up to for her confidence and being a quintessential of the high school mean girl.
Next time watching a movie or starting a show, look out for the trope that stands out the most, and how their outfit plays a role in telling their story- it will always.
Loved it!
